Can Babies Eat Dairy

Can Babies Eat Dairy?

Dairy is a business enterprise founded for the harvesting and processing of animal milk for human consumption. The source of the milk is usually from cows and buffalos, but it can also come from goats, sheep or camels.

Milk producing animals have been domesticated for thousands of years, not only for their milk, but also for their meat.

There are many different dairy products: milk, fermented milk, yogurt, cream, butter, cheese, casein, custard or ice cream.

Milk has essential nutrients: protein, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, B12, D, riboflavin, niacin.

Is Dairy Bad for Babies ?

You could give dairy products to your baby as soon as she eats solid foods, but parents should pay attention to possible dairy allergies. If your baby did not show symptoms of breast milk or of cow’s milk-based formula allergy, you could introduce into the baby’s diet some dairy products as regular, unsweetened and plain yogurt or cheese at the age of 6 months old.

Cheese contributes to a healthy diet for babies, but they can eat only pasteurized full- fat cheese.

Butter is essentially just milk fat, containing lactose only in traces, so the moderate consumption of butter should not be a problem for lactose intolerant babies. Butter is a source of calories, fat, sodium and vitamin A.

Why Can Babies Have Yogurt But Not Milk ?

Some yogurts, such as Activia from the Groupe Danone contain probiotics assisting digestion, bringing relief to those who suffer from diarrhea, and lactose intolerance. Yogurt is made by fermentation, so its protein can be much more easily digested by babies’ tummies than proteins in cow’s milk. Pediatricians usually recommend serving Greek Yogurt to babies of the age 8 – 10 months.
