Can Babies Eat Mayo?
Mayonnaise or mayo is a thick condiment, dressing or base usually used in hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and Tartar sauce. It consists of oil, egg yolk and lemon juice or vinegar. The egg yolk, containing proteins and lecithin, plays the role of emulsifier in mayo. Mayonnaise can be of different colors and can have a variety of texture, depending on the ingredients. There exists vegan mayo as well, made out of egg-free products.
Mayonnaise was used in Spain and in France, but the first recording of the sauce as mayonnaise was in French cookbooks in the 18th century.
Mayonnaise can be prepared by hand with a whisk, a fork or with an electric mixer or blender. During the process of making mayo, oil is slowly added to the egg yolk.
Mayo has calories, fat, but also vitamins E and K, and sodium. It is also associated with Salmonella.
