Can Babies Eat Halibut?

Halibut is a name used for two flatfish. The word comes from the two words haly, meaning holy and butte, meaning flat fish. Halibut are bottom feeder fish, they feed on or near the bottom of the water. Halibut are highly regarded not just as food fish, but also as sport fish. Halibut played an important role as food source to Alaska Natives and to Canadian First Nations. Due to overfishing this species was almost declared an endangered one, and consumers were recommended to avoid the Atlantic halibut. Sport fishermen reported a change in the consistency of these fish in 2012, change probably caused by a change in the diet of halibut.

Halibut are usually boiled, grilled or deep- fried, they are rarely smoked, because of their low fat content making the smoking process difficult. Eaten fresh, halibut do not need much seasoning, having a clean taste.

Raw halibut is high in protein, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamins D and several types of vitamin B. Cooked halibut has increased levels of protein, magnesium, phosphorus and selenium, but reduced quantities of vitamin B.

Ingredients: ½ cup chopped leeks, 1 cup broccoli florets, 1 cup cubed halibut, 1 sprig thyme, 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil.

Put the chopped leeks, broccoli florets, cubed halibut and thyme in a steamer basket. Pour water into the tank and start cooking. When the fish and vegetables are all cooked, transfer them into a blender, reserving the cooking liquid for later purpose. Add the olive oil and sufficient cooking liquid to get the desired consistency.
