Can Babies Eat Peas?

Peas are the seeds or the seed-pods of the pod fruit called Pisum sativum. Every pod has several peas, which can be either yellow or green. The immature ones are used as vegetables in their fresh, frozen or canned form. Peas originate from the Mediterranean basin, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Jordan.

There are three types of peas: garden, sugar and field peas. Whereas garden peas include a great variety of peas, sugar peas include two main types: snow peas and snap or sugar snap peas. The main difference between the two main types of sugar peas is, that snow peas have flat pods with thin pod walls, while snap peas have rounded pods with thick pod walls. Field peas are one of the oldest domesticated crops, and are cultivated worldwide for both human consumption and stock feed.

Peas are a good source of carbs, protein and dietary fibers. They contain high levels of vitamins B9, B1 and B5, and also of iron. There are some babies, who can have allergic reaction to peas, as well as to lentils.

Yellow Split Pea, Carrot and Rice Baby Food

Ingredients: 1 cup yellow peas, 4 large, peeled and chopped carrots, 1/3 cup basmati rice, 1 cup water to cover, 2 tbsp olive oil.

Put the split peas and carrots into a small saucepan, add the water just to cover them. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer, and simmer for about 30 minutes, until the peas get tender. Keep adding water in order for the peas not to stick to the bottom of the pan. Add the rice and 2/3 cup of water to the saucepan, bring to a boil and cook for about 12 minutes, until the rice gets tender. Remove from the heat and add the olive oil and blend until you get the wanted consistency.
